Jonathan Hurst on the Future of Humanoid Robotics

Jonathan Hurst, Chief Robot Officer and co-founder of Agility Robotics, recently presented a TEDxPortland talk on the future of humanoid robotics. His presentation, titled “The Future of Humanoid Robotics,” highlighted how these machines are entering a new era. This new generation of robots is powered by embodied AI, enabling them to perceive, learn, move, and work effectively in spaces designed for humans. The full talk is available for viewing (video).

Hurst, who is also a Professor and co-founder of the Oregon State University Robotics Institute, explained how humanoid robots are poised to reshape labor, expand human capabilities, and ultimately become tireless partners in addressing significant global challenges. His work focuses on developing robot hardware and control methods that achieve the compliance, dexterity, and mobility observed in the animal world. This approach aims to allow robots to perform useful work in human environments.

He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. and Ph.D. in robotics, all from Carnegie Mellon University. His research and development efforts are directed towards generating greater productivity across the economy and improving the quality of life for everyone through advanced robotics.

As humanoid robots become more prevalent and integrated into daily operations, the need for clear standards governing their interaction, safety, and communication protocols becomes increasingly important for broad adoption and effective deployment.
